Spring weather in France

WeatherA few months ago, as I was preparing for our road trip to the north of France , I started searching the internet for information about the weather out there in April. We wanted to visit Lannion, Saint Malo, Mont Saint Michel, Fougeres plus a part of the Loire Valley and a good weather would have helped us.

Preparing for the weather in France

I was hoping to see actual stories from peoples experience and get some answers to questions like “what to wear in Normandy and Brittany,France” ,”what’s the weather like in April on the Loire Valley”, but I didn’t really get the info I wanted. After our trip there (you can read all about it in my other articles) I decided to share with you some info and stories on the weather (some of them are actually very funny). After seeing the weather forecast for that period, we realized we could not rely so much on the weather, so there was nothing left to do but pray for warm days .

What to wear in Normandy and Brittany in France in the Spring

Get with you a jacket , water resistant shoes, a scarf and don’t forget the umbrella, or have a second pair of clothes to change into.

Lannion- The weather here was cold – maximum 15°C (59°F) and it rained almost every day, however the town was very pretty and cozy, with a lot of floral arrangements and palm trees, which made the weather bearable. Plus there the temperature out there is pretty much constant during the year, so that means you shouldn’t worry about snow.

Saint Malo- a walled port city in Normandy , birthplace for many pirates(corsairs). The maximum temperature in April there is 13°C (55°F) with wind and often rain. The place is well known for its giant, cold waves formed during the tides phenomena .The panoramic view from the walls of Saint Malo and the seafood here were incredible.

Mont Saint Michel- maximum 12(53°C) We’ve seen it both on rainy and on sunny weather. Even though the temperature outside the fortress can be low in April, once inside you’ll not feel the cold anymore, as you have to climb steps and manage to survive on the most crowded narrow streets I’ve ever seen. Plus you’ll be to busy trying to protect your face from all the open umbrellas, ready to get in your eyes.

We stayed in Fougeres – for two rainy days, but that only made the place even more beautiful and quiet The maximum temperature here was 15°C(59°F) . Here is a picture of the place, as you can see not many vistors dared to leave the house.,so we could walk peacefully aroud this beautiful city .

What’s the weather like in April on the Loire Valley ?!

Answer- cloudy with a chance of showers

Once we entered the Loire Valley, the weather got better and we could leave our jackets at home and see most of the castles without worrying too much about the rain. There were however a few exceptions, as you can see in the following lines. The maximum temperature the in the middle of April , in Azay le Rideau- a place close to the most important castles ,was 16°C(60,8 F). I dare say it seemed hotter.

It was a beautiful afternoon on the Loire Valley, after seeing Chateau d’Usse and Chateau d’Azay le Rideau, we decided the weather was good enough to make a visit to the Castle Villandry .We heard a lot about its beautiful, large gardens, so we started our tour among the many green labyrinths out there .Once we reached a point from where we could have a panorama over these gardens, it started raining. I don’t remember if we had with us an umbrella, but still it wouldn’t have helped us very much. I wanted to protect the camera, so we started running till the car. It was actually very funny because as we ran, we realized we looked like some rats running in a labyrinth. By the time I got to the car, my pants and my shoes were wet, but luckily the camera was ok. This is a picture of the gardens before it started raining, I couldn’t get one during the rain.
